Deposit is a new sound installation from interdisciplinary conceptual sound artist Ricardo iamuuri Robinson. This thought-provoking piece is a meditation on insecurity and our relentless desire to preserve and store everything, be it physical objects or cherished memories. Through the exploration of hoarding analog memories, the installation pushes the boundaries of our attachment to material possessions.
The installation cleverly juxtaposes elements that symbolize capture and containment with those that represent the uncontrollable forces of nature. This contrast highlights the tension between our need for security and the fear of losing everything, while also hinting at manufactured scarcity and the liberating feeling that comes with letting go. The implied destruction and decay in the artwork further emphasize these conflicting emotions.
The visual aspect of the installation features thirty-three metal safety deposit boxes suspended from the ceiling, positioned above a traditional ten-foot fishing net. Accompanied by ambient electronic sounds, montages of seascapes are projected onto three flatscreens, creating an immersive experience for the viewers. The combination of these visual, auditory, and spatial elements transports participants into a state of deep listening, encouraging them to reflect on their own insecurities and the complex relationship between preservation and freedom.
