BLACKBODY WHITE NOISE

"Blackbody, White Noise" is a complex radio art sound installation created by Ricardo iamuuri Robinson. The sound aspect was designed during Robinson's residency with Wave Farm Artists-in-Residence 2021, where he utilized two vacant cast iron cubes and sound reproduction technology. These cubes, feature a single hole, (referred to as a Blackbody) that absorbs all sunlight and radiation that is incident upon it and re-radiates this energy throughout their interior space.

Throughout the duration of the residency, Robinson intentionally collected sounds of thermal conduction, micro-heat waves, and internal and external ambience. These recordings were then manipulated and combined with excerpts from La'Vender Freddy's Sunscreen Conspiracy project, (a media archive artwork that addresses racial politics and social injustices) creating a unique sonic relationship. The title "Blackbody, White Noise" draws inspiration from Frantz Fanon's renowned literary work, "Black Skin, White Mask," and also serves as a metaphorical exploration of forces determined to control the light of the Sun. The final audio emanates from speakers housed within the cast iron cubes, creating an immersive and engaging experience for the audience.

The iron casting location for these cubic sculptures hold significant historical and symbolic meaning. Situated at the site of the now decommissioned iron blast furnaces Carrie #6 and #7, which once symbolized the thriving steel industry in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and whole Tri-State region. By forging two cast iron cubes on the grounds of Carrie, Robinson pays homage to the history of Black steelworkers in the area, evoking their contributions toward a reckless industrial progress.

"Blackbody, White Noise" invites viewers to reflect upon the historical conflicts and struggles surrounding labor, racial inequality, and the control of power. Through this immersive sonic meditation, Robinson encourages listeners to reimagine a new future inspired by a new solar narrative, one that challenges existing power structures and fosters a more inclusive and equitable society.
